TIPS TO CONTROL DANDRUFF
Shampoo the hair more often
Most experts believe that it in order to control dandruff problem, it is important to wash the hair as frequently as possible if not every day. This will keep the scalp clean by washing way the flakes. If the hair is washed everyday then the dandruff will get washed away everyday.
Use a mild Shampoo First
Initially deal with the problem gently by using a regular non medicated shampoo but more often. Most of the times Dandruff occurs due to excessive oil on the scalp which by regular washing gets washed away. For some people just a everyday use of a mild shampoo might solve the problem of dandruff.
Use a Anti Dandruff Shampoo
Anti Dandruff shampoos are more harsh therefore if a frequent use of a regular shampoo does not work for you, then switch to a medicated anti dandruff shampoo. Always use a anti dandruff shampoo twice while taking a shower. As soon as you get into the shower, lather your hair by gently massaging the shampoo on to the scalp and leave it their for some time before rinsing it out properly. Now lather one more time, this time just wash it away quickly. The second lathering leaves some medication on the scalp to protect it from dandruff till your next shower. What you can also do is, put a shower cap on your head after you lather up, this will increase the effectiveness of the dandruff shampoo.
Use a Tar Based Shampoo
If the regular anti dandruff shampoo does not seem to work for you, them go for a tar based formula. It is important to leave the tar shampoo on the scalp for atleast 7 to 8 minutes before rinsing it out. Since tar based shampoos or any other anti dandruff shampoos are very strong, you can alternate them with a regular shampoo if you feel that it is getting too harsh for your hair.
Always Switch Shampoos
It is always recommended to change your shampoo and switch to a different brand every few months. If a Shampoo is used for a very long period then the scalp gets use to of the ingredients in the shampoo decreasing its effectiveness.
Use a Conditioner
Even though the anti dandruff shampoos are effective on the scalp, they can cause damage to the hair making them a little rough. Therefore it is important to use a good conditioner after every shampoo to soften and nourish the hair.
Sun Rays Are Important
It is believed that a little exposure of the head to the sun is helpful to control the dandruff problem since the ultraviolet rays are believed to have an anti-inflammatary effect on flaky skin conditions. On an average a 30 minutes exposure to the sun is sufficient for the scalp.
Warm oil in a pan and then apply it to the scalp with the help of a cotton ball. For best results it is advisable to wet the hair first before applying the oil, otherwise the oil gets soaked up by the hair and the scalp remains dry. Put a shower cap on the head for 30 minutes and then wash your hair with a anti dandruff shampoo followed by a conditioner.
These were some of the tips to control dandruff but if non of these seem to be working or the condition worsens, please see a dermatologist for medical treatment.
