Dancing is an art that involves expressions, flexibility and movement of the body to the rhythmic sounds or music. Dancing has evolved many styles based on the culture. There different variety of dances all over the world. International dances such as salsa, Rock ‘n' Roll, ballet, break dance, tap dance etc are popular and known by many world wide. But do you know that India, the land of great mix of different cultures has a number of classical Indian dance forms, that marks the uniqueness of different states in the country? There are also several special folk dances that are performed during regional festivals. Every type of dance has a distinct style of costume, story and steps. Types of Indian classical dances: Bharathanatiyam: This is the dance form originated in the state of Tamil Nadu, South India. In this style, the dancers dance to the classical carnatic music that includes different south Indian instruments like mirthangam, nathaswaram,violin etc. This dance includes extensive neck, eye movements, head movements, facial expressions, hand gestures as a way of communication. The debut performance after which a dancer has learnt and mastered all the elements of the dance is known as 'Arangetram'. Kathakali: This dance form is from the Kerala, the southern state of India. This is unique for its totally different attractive, heavy make-up, costumes and combined with heavy head gear. This also emphasis on hand gestures, rhythmic movement of hand, leg and body. The most popular stories from Ramayana and Mahabharatha are enacted. The music includes several heavy percussion instruments called 'vadhyam'. Mohiniattam: It is the traditional dance from Kerala. It includes gentle, graceful movement, palm and fingers gesture. The costume is the trademark of this dance. It is the white saree, with bright golden border suited with golden color jewels. The music is usually in malayalam or sanskrit. Kuchipudi: This is from the state of Andhra pradesh in the south. The uniqueness of this dance includes the dancer must dance upon a brass plate, holding the dhiyas, and balancing small vessel on the head. The song is usually carnatic music. This shares common elements with Bhararathanatiyam. Kathak: Kathak dance form originated in North India. Going by the name, where 'katha' means story, kathak is the person who tells the story in a dance sequence. These dances were popular in mughal court. The music to this would be ghazal, bajan, thumri. This includes complex footwork, seqtial spins at great speed, facial expressions pertaining to the story. The costume includes lehenga-choli for female and dhothi or kurtha for male dancers. Odissi: Odissi is from Orissa state in the north-eastern part of India. This is a distinguished dance form, that includes independent movement of head, hip and upper portion of the body. The style is slower and requires great balance and control. Manipuri: This is from Manipur state in north-eastern India. This dance is a soft, graceful appearance with feet movement is dominated throughout. The do not wear ankle bells and they never strike the ground hard with their feet. The music is accompanied by percussion instruments like pung and flute. Typical costume which has a drum shaped skirt that never flounces and this elaborate costume known as Kumil. Sattriya: This is the traditional dance of Assam. This dance adheres to strict sattriya as these dances were performed by male monks of Assam earlier. The musical compostion are based on ragas and includes flute and violin instruments. The costume is usually the silk made from Assam and all the traditional Assamese jewelery. Folk dances: Though several classical dances are performed in unique ways, India is also famous for variety of folk dances world wide. All these are performed with great enthusiasm and energy that brings out the joyous mood during the festivals. It is all accompanied by rhythmic mind blowing music, variety of musical instruments, props, colorful costume, extensive jewellery etc; The popular folk dances of India are Bhangra, dhandiya, garbha, kolattam, kummi, mayilattam and many more. All these are great form of expression that is out burst to its fullness.
