Internet has undergone rapid development and a great evolution in this modern era, that has brought the globe in a single room. Yes, it is a small world now! Internet has been a boon to the mankind making life easier. With several facilities in the field of communication, e-commerce, services like online banking, job search portals, purchasing online ticket for entertainment etc, internet has become most common and powerful tool for mankind throughout the world. Cyber crime: Internet has got lot to offer. But on the flip side, internet is not devoid of crime and exploitation. Internet evolution has created trans-national crimes known as 'cyber crimes'. To be simple, cyber crime is the illegal activity committed on the internet. Cyber crimes take place against a person, property and Government. Identifying the culprit of cyber crime is difficult as the internet is readily exposed to evil web is deceiving and can be accessed from any part of the globe. For these reasons, cyber crimes are considered as 'white-collar' crimes. When internet is not used in the safe way, it becomes a bane to the society. We use internet daily for various transaction. Mostly employee's salary is credited in the bank and we use online banking for funds transfer, paying utility bills, online shopping etc. Security in all these is a major concern. Different types of internet crimes Computer Hacking: Hacking is illegally breaking into some others computer system and get their information. It is unauthorized network access. Hacker is the person who gets the unauthorized information from a persons or organizations private computer system. When your online banking account is hacked, they can rob your money too. IP address hacking is a serious cyber crime that lets the person transact with a false identity. Spam: This is a e-mail scam, that floods your mailbox. It will have promotional offers of free stuffs and get your information like home address and phone numbers. They will then sell these information to a telemarketing people and in turn you will be swamped by marketing calls. Phishing: This is another crime that takes place in e-mail. These e-mails will have a link that takes you to a fake website, that resembles just like your bank website, with all the logos and look and feel. They will lure you to enter your username and password and then use it on the real site with your identity. credit card fraud: The credit card fraud usually affects the merchants. When the customer uses his credit card for buying things through online shopping and the money deducted from their account does not reach the merchant for his product. It is stolen by the virtual criminal. If the customer has the proof of his order and when he does not receive it, the merchant usually reimburses him in order to maintain his trust in the business. Pyramid schemes: These are the business scheme models that are unsustainable. They are throughout the internet. They ask people to invest money in hopes of gaining money. In this, people invest their money and when they get to enroll more persons into this, they gain money. It is a chain when they form the pyramid of income as the persons enroll. Later, when he may just stop doing it or will disappear with every money leaving other persons in the pyramid with nothing. The recent scam which popped up in India, is the 'Gold quest' is of this pyramid schemes. Spyware: This is a software that collects information from your system and sells it to the third party. It will have the information of the sites that you visited, your access information like username and password. This gets downloaded in your system when you agree to download another program. This will cause damage to your computer too like some of your key board keys will not work, home page suddenly changes, random message, slow performance of your system etc Virus: This is a software program that gets into your system and destroys your data in the system. It can cause small to major damage to your computer. This will spread through your internet service to others in the network. Apart from these there are pornography, Lottery scams, investment scams, work from home scams, mortgage fraud, charities fraud that put the internet users at risk. How to safe guard against cyber crimes: - Everybody who uses internet must use internet security products like anti virus, anti spyware programs installed in their computer. -Maintaining maximum anonymity is always the safest option while browsing the Internet. - Use anti phishing browsers. Google and other reputed toolbars, as well as browsers such as Internet Explorer 7 and Mozilla's Firefox 2+ come installed with anti-phishing software. - Do your online banking only in your system. Doing it in the public internet cafe may be risky. If you happen to access your banking in such public places, make sure that you change your passwords later on to minimize the risk. - Check your bank accounts, credit card account statements frequently. Make sure you are not bogus charged. - Never open an e-mail that is from an unknown person or respond to a unknown email with your personal information. -When you know that the mail is a spam, then mark it as spam using the options in the email service. - If you get any suspicious invite through chat, then block that contact. - Whenever you make money transactions make sure that you have secure sites. - Do online shopping only through popular, genuine merchant. - Do not float your personal information like your address, phone number, Social security number, credit card number, pin etc at any cost. - Keep changing your passwords at regular intervals. -Do not allow strangers access to your web camera. Enjoy the benefits of internet in a secured way and not fall a prey to cyber crime.
