Crimes Against The Elderly - Crime And Abuse of Senior CitizensBY: Ms Royce | Category: Others | Post Date: 2008-07-13
Every 2.7 minutes, one elderly person is victimized in the United States. Common types of elder abuse include physical nursing home abuse, financial abuse and exploitation and other crimes. The number of crimes against older people of our society is hard to ignore. Senior Citizens are often targets for robbery, purse snatching, pick pocketing, car theft or victims of telephone scams. During a crime an older person is more likely to be seriously hurt tan someone who is younger. Its sad to say, the elderly in our society are often the victims of violent crimes. Crimes against the elderly should be treated with maximum severity. As the population of the United States grows older, the problems of elder abuse and crimes against the elderly are garnering increased attention from policy makers. Although historically considered a matter relegated to the privacy of the family, anecdotal evidence suggest that the criminal justice system has begun to devote increased resources to these crimes. Elite police squads has been set up to target thieves who prey on the elderly and vulnerable has lead to an increase in the number of arrests. There is no doubt that the people who commit these crimes are vile, evil and callous. Everybody, particularly the elderly and vulnerable has the right to be safe in their own homes. These individuals who pose as council workmen, water board officials or use any excuse to get inside the homes to ransack rooms and steal whatever they can lay their hands on, are nothing less than vultures. Even though there are risks, don't let the fear of crime stop you from enjoying life. Here are some tips to protect yourselves from the onset of crime. Be aware of your surroundings at all times. To be safe at home make sure your locks, doors, and windows are strong and cannot be broken easily. A good alarm system can be very helpful. Check to make sure your doors and windows are locked both when you are in the house and when you're away. Make a list of your expensive belongings. You might even take pictures of the most valuable items. Store these papers in a safe place. Ask the local police department about making your valuable property with an I.D. number. Don't open your door before you know who is there. Ask any stranger for proof of identity before opening the door. Remember, you don't have to open the door if you feel uneasy. Don't keep large amounts of cash in the house. Get to know your neighbors, and join in a neighborhood watch program if there is one available in your community. Be street smart and stay alert. Walk with a friend and stay away from unsafe places like dark alleys or parking lots. Keep your doors locked at all times, and don't open your car door or roll down your window for strangers. Park in well lit areas and if confronted by a robber, don't resist, hand over your cash right away. In conclusion to this article, our society should help to protect our Senior Citizens.
