Cricket is a sport that originated in England. It spread to all parts of the world during the reign of the British Empire. This is the reason for it being more popular in Asian counties, West Indies and Australia, while being unpopular in America and most parts of Europe. Cricket started as a 5 day test match. The main focus then was to exhibit your endurance and play out the days, and try to win the match. This metamorphosed into one day matches which were played for sixty overs first and then fifty overs later. This has now been reduced to just twenty overs. The twenty over game has caught the imagination of people and even countries that have never played cricket are having another look at the game, now that it is full of fun and nail biting excitement. The twenty over game just takes three hours to finish compared to the long haul of test matches. Many cricket lovers still feel that test matches bring the best out of a batsman. This may be true as it tests the endurance and brings out the best in a player. But the reason T20 or twenty over matches have caught on is because it is very exciting and gets your adrenaline pumping before it gets over. There can be many twists in the game within the three hours. This is the game for the present generation where people do not have much time for relaxation. The twenty twenty matches are usually played in the evenings when people either watch the game directly or on television. The statistics are proof enough of the popularity of the twenty over game. Indian Premier League : This was started by the Board for Cricket in India. It has a mix of experienced as well as rookie players. It also is blended with Indian national, international and other players. This makes it more exciting to watch. The franchise by various cities also bring out the state and city passions to the fore. Twenty Twenty World Cup: The twenty twenty world cup matches that are starting in England are bound to bring more excitement. India won the inaugural World cup. The team has rich experience with the players gaining a lot from the IPL. There are people who say that this would have led to burn out among the players. This might play a role in the outcome. But the real fact is that on any day, the team that does well on that particular day is going to win. So let us hope that we have another feast for our cricket hunger. May the best team win.
