Common causes of high blood pressure and methods of reducing the risksBY: David Prakash Kumar | Category: Health and Fitness | Post Date: 2009-11-05
Blood pressure is actually the pressure that is measured when the blood exerts a force on the artery walls through which it flows. The blood in the persons system always passes through various arteries and can be measured using the sphygmomanometer. As the artery walls are narrowed due to various causes including diseases, the blood pressure increases. This is the common cause of blood pressure in an individual. There are various factors that contribute to the cause of increased blood pressure. These factors are sometimes called as the risk factors and sometimes these actually are called as the cause of the blood pressure. The common causes include age, obesity, gender of the person, race of the person, diseased conditions, smoking, alcoholism, pregnancy and various other factors. Some of these factors that cause increased blood pressure like the obesity, alcoholism, smoking can be either modified or stopped to control the blood pressure. Other factors like the age, genetic factors cannot be modified. The various factors that can cause an increase in the levels of the blood pressure of an individual are: Age: As the individual gets older, the blood pressure usually increases. As the person gets older, modifying the diet to make it healthier and also increasing the exercise will reduce the risk of elevated blood pressure. Smoking: There is a mechanism by which smoking can cause an increase in the blood pressure. The person who smokes has an increase in the deposits that occur on the vessel walls and this can narrow the area through which the blood flows and this can cause increased blood pressure. Pregnancy: This is not present in all pregnant women, but some women who are pregnant have elevated levels of blood pressure. This elevated blood pressure usually comes back to the normal level after the baby is delivered. Genetic factors: When the parents of a individual are hypertensive, then there is a very high chance that the individual will also be hypertensive. This is a factor that cannot be modified. So people whose parents are already hypertensive should be extra careful and try to reduce or avoid other risk factors like smoking, obesity and alcoholism. Obesity: Obesity is one of the common causes of hypertension. When a person is obese, the individual has a lot of extra fat in the body. This can get deposited in the artery walls and this in turn decreases the area through which the blood can flow. This causes an increase in the blood pressure of the individual. Diet: The diet of an individual also plays a major role in the blood pressure levels of the individual. A person who has very high blood pressure should try to reduce all saturated fats in the diet. Even those who are other wise at a high risk for hypertension should avoid animal foods as they are very high in cholesterol. Increased intake of natural foods like fruits and vegetables will help in getting the blood pressure under control and also reduce the risks. These are the various common causes of blood pressure and the methods of reducing the risks.
