Few years back when our family was travelling in a transport bus, two young men boarded the bus. One of them sat beside me as the seat was vacant. After sometime he lit the cigarette which is very much allergic to me. I stared at him very sharply. But he did not bother. My husband knows that I cannot tolerate the smell. So he shifted to my seat. I started discussing with my children the bad effect of cigarette. First of all I mention, smoking not only ruins lungs but also raises blood pressure. They are prone to heart attack and atherosclerosis (Atherosclerosis (ath-er-o-skler-O-sis) is a disease in which plaque (plak) builds up on the insides of your arteriesis.) I knew this much only about health problem. Then I began with an incident which I heard from my father in childhood. There was a family where parents and two sons were there. The father was a smoker .He used to smoke two to three cigarettes a day in the beginning. His wife used to tell him not to smoke as the children were growing. As the days passed he increased his intake to two to three packets a day. His wife used to make him understand the ill-effect of cigarette. He used to fight with her always over smoking. This way the year passed. Suddenly, his wife was not keeping well. He did not even bother to show her to doctor. The wife became very weak. His elder son was then ten years old, he asked his mother to visit the doctor. He accompanied her to doctor. Looking at her condition the doctor told him to go for all the tests. Next day all the tests had been done. When the husband brought the report in the evening , he was speechless. Both the children asked about the report. The elder son was quite intelligent. He understood something is wrong there. When he asked his father, his father busted into tears and said -I have killed your mother'. Next day, they went to a specialist and found that she was suffering from lung cancer. The specialist asked her ‘Do you smoke ?' She smilingly nodded her head and looked at her husband with doleful eyes. Her husband started crying effusively, and said Doctor -please save her, I have killed her.- The doctor replied, the people around him are more affected than the smoker (called Passive smoker). After few days she passed away . Though he left cigarette, but at the cost of what? When my story got over, the two young men apologised and said -You have opened our eyes, we will be grateful to you forever.- If you can help someone indirectly, there will be no fight at all and the earth will be a positive place to live in.
