Child-proofing your homeBY: David Prakash Kumar | Category: Home Improvement | Post Date: 2009-06-02
Children are the apple of our eyes. We take care of them as much as possible. But are they as safe as we presume them to be? There are hundreds of accidents happening everyday and most of them are household accidents with children being on the receiving end of many an accident. This brings us to the question if our children are safe from the various dangers lurking around our houses. Are our houses really child- safe? Can our children run around without injuring themselves? These are a few questions every loving parent would think about. Child-proofing your home is important. Here are a few tips on making our houses and surroundings children safe or child proof your home. Danger from falls: Falls are the most common reason for injury in children, though it may not be fatal in most of the cases. Children do not have the ability to stop suddenly when they are playing. This makes them fall many a time. The best way to prevent such injuries would be to give their extremities proper padding / protection when they play. Also make low walled or glass covered enclosures out of bounds for children if the area is not on the ground level. Danger from inhalation / intake of foreign objects: This is the second most common danger for children, but it leads to the highest number of mortality or death. This is true especially in the developing countries. The only prevention method is to keep all dangerous items out of reach of children and also constantly monitoring the children. Danger from electricity: Though this is not a very common reason of injury in children, there are incidences of deaths occurring due to shocks. All sockets should be out of reach of children. Regular maintenance is required. A tripping circuit can be installed that cuts off the electricity when it comes in contact with the earth. Also earthing of all circuits can make our homes safer for children.
