During pregnancy, the child has to be born between thirty seven and forty two weeks. If the child is born before the completion of thirty seven weeks, then the child is said to be a pre term baby. There are various causes of the pre term birth of the babies. These babies are also called premature babies or preemies. The causes are listed in this article.

In many instances the cause of pre term birth of babies remains unknown. The factors that have been found to be the cause of pre term babies include:

1. Maternal age:
Though the maternal age is not a major factor in the cause of pre term babies, there is an increase in the number of pre term babies. The optimal age for pregnancy would be from the age of 20 to the age of 35 years.

2. Multiple pregnancy: If the woman has more than one baby in the womb, the over distension of the uterus can sometimes automatically cause pre term delivery. The risk increases with the number of babies in the womb. The risk of a woman with twins is more than a woman with a single fetus. Similarly, a woman with triplets can have more risk of pre term babies.

3. Social class: The women in the lower socio economic group have a higher chance of having a pre term delivery. This can be due to the fact that these women are at a higher risk of getting maternal illness. Nutritional deficiency in these women may also be a reason for the pre term birth of babies. Most women in the lower socio economic group do not eat a nutritious balanced meal.

4. Disease in mother: There are various diseases that can occur in a woman during pregnancy. The various diseases that a woman can get during pregnancy are pre-eclampsia, infection, diabetes and placental problems. When a woman has these kinds of diseases, then there is a chance of pre term birth of babies.

5. Previous history: A history of previous abortion or miscarriage can also lead to a higher chance of pre term birth of babies. The reason may be because interventions that relate to the cervix can cause cervical incompetence leading to pre term birth of babies.

6. Fetal causes: The presence of congenital abnormalities and any growth retardation can also cause pre term delivery of babies.

These are the various causes of pre term delivery of babies (premature baby or preemies.). Adequate care and nutritious diet can help in preventing pre term deliveries.
