Causes, signs and treatment of Fluid Retention in the bodyBY: David Prakash Kumar | Category: Health and Fitness | Post Date: 2009-11-09
Water retention is a swelling that occurs in a person who has had excess fluids staying on in the system without being excreted; this can cause various symptoms like swelling of various parts of the body. There are various causes of fluid retention and these are explained in this article. Causes of fluid retention 1. Excess salt or sugar in the diet: When a person consumes a large amount of sugar or salt, then there is a gross mismatch in the osmotic pressures causing the fluids to be retained in the tissues and not being absorbed into the system. This can lead to swelling of the feet and even puffiness of the face which are the typical signs of fluid retention. 2. Protein in the diet: When a person who is on a diet does not take enough protein in the diet, then it can also lead to fluid retention. Usually when a person is on a diet, they reduce the food intake and when this happens, usually the protein content of the food falls to below normal levels that can lead to edema and cause increased weight of the person. This is because the protein in the diet removes the fluid. This is one of the reasons for all diets in the recent times trying to promote a protein rich diet to reduce weight. 3. Fruits and vegetables: Fruits and vegetables are the major cause of preventing fluid retention. When people do not include adequate amount of fruits and vegetables in the diet, then it can cause increased water retention in the body. This in turn causes the person to have puffiness and edema. 4. Medications: The medications that a person uses to control certain disorders can also cause fluid retention. This is because the medications cause the various imbalances in the body as a side effect and leads to water retention. 5. Lack of exercise: When a person does a lot of exercise, the fluid in the lower part of the body is pumped up to the central parts and this causes the fluid to be absorbed. In people who have had a sedentary lifestyle and do not exercise properly, the lack of exercise itself can cause the fluid retention to occur. Prevention and treatment of fluid retention: Prevention and treatment of fluid retention are actually based on the cause of the fluid retention. When the fluid retention in the person's body is due to the decreased intake of proteins, the amount of protein in the diet has to be increased to make the fluid retention to decrease. If the medications that the individual is using are the cause of the water retention, then the medications may have to be changed to reduce the water retention. This has to be done in consultation with the medical practitioner who prescribed the medicines. Reduced intake of salt and sugar will also help to reduce the fluid retention and also reduce the puffiness and the edema. Adequate exercises will also have the same effect on the fluid retention.
