Careers beyond IT. Good career options other than software industryBY: JNLakshmi | Category: Education | Post Date: 2008-10-06
Recession in the year 2001: IT boom in India during mid 90's saw several IT companies flourishing in the e-Commerce, .COM era. But the recession in US in the year 2001 did have an impact on India that no one would ever forget. There was several lay offs, sluggish IT job market, freshers who passed out in the year 2001 were much affected due to this recession as their call letters were cancelled or put on hold. There was steep fall in people taking computer science branch in colleges that year. But post-recession saw huge tremendous growth in IT industry. Current IT slowdown: Now it is like all over again. The recent economic slowdown in USA, with several financial institution collapse and merging of companies has all intensified the rough phase in the Indian IT and IT-enabled services, as USA accounts for the largest share of the Indian software and outsourcing market. When US firms slash their IT budgets, Indian service companies could be adversely affected. There has been several news that most IT companies have been downsizing. People in IT companies are in the dread of pink slips. In many companies the size of employees on 'bench' are huge and are at high risk of layoffs. They are also cutting down the 'reserve' or 'shadow' resources. Many under performers have also been laid off. Sizable percentage cut in the variable component has been announced in few companies. I read in one of the blogs, that a person in bench for couple of months, has become a freelance writer. As far as I read, the impact of US slowing will be less in case of developing countries like India and it is consoling that recession story is not frightening after all. Despite the difficulties, India still offers IT talent at a relative cost advantage to US firms, and so India will retain its appeal as an offshoring destination. This trend is unlikely to end anytime soon. Careers beyond IT: Information Technology, hitech white collar job with high salaries, overseas postings has lured many people to choose this career. Recent trend shows that due to the uncertainty in the services companies, People are now moving to greener pastures. I read an article today from business line that freshers, this year have turned down their offers from IT companies that recruited through campus and opted for jobs in core engineering sectors. The reasons they gave was that they don't want to be a dot in the crowd. Also, they say they don't want to be 'benched'. Freshers are now aware of various options opened to them. There are several manufacturing sectors that are in short of engineers. They take in the diploma students and train them. When you opt for studies, go for the ones that enhance your employability and you give your best in your chosen field of education. There are quiet a lot of opportunities in aeronautics, biotechnology, electrical engineering, forensic, finance and banking, nursing, pharmaceuticals, fashion, photography and the list is endless. All these areas offer bright career prospects too. If salaries are matched competitively in the market, one will see more interest and talent emerging in alternate fields. With multinational companies not only investing in the service sector, you can see them in construction, hotel management - hospitality industry, fashion industry they will definitely improve the salary and other facilities. I wish that the students would analyze various career options beyond IT and take a road less travelled and achieve big!
