Gone are the days, where men used to be the bread winner of family. Now, women equally and exceptionally do well in their career. It not only helps in the betterment of financial situation of the family, but also makes a women to practice what ever she has studied, it is more important to them as a career rather than just a job. Though a women is career-oriented and ambitious, there are several factors that hinder her professional journey. Career break due to various reasons: Women are forced to take break in their career to focus on several personal reasons like raising a child, to take care of elder ones at home, personal health reasons or doing higher studies like MBA or MS. It is even more pathetic that though there are no such reasons, working women need to take break when they come to other countries joining one's spouse in his location of posting for his career advancement. They have to apply for visa to work. In USA, where the work visa application is selected through lottery, getting the visa is mere luck. The lottery takes place only once in a year. If they miss it, they have to wait for another year to try their luck and not to mention the huge amount to be spent on this process. Several women are the victim of such turmoil. Yeah, I am one among the crowd who goes through this rough phase. Well qualified, experienced professionals who studied in premier institutes like IIT, BITS, Anna university etc are also facing this. It is very difficult to achieve good work-life balance. Career break - Pros and Cons Sabbatical or long leave, has become quiet popular in recent times. But how does it affect the person? Well, it has both pros and cons. Seeing all the positive aspects, When you are on a break to raise your little one, then absolutely no regrets. Nothing is more important than seeing your little ones doing all that he has to do in the tiny stages. Experiencing the joy of motherhood is peerless. Your presence at every time is really valued and you get to enjoy the great bondage with your child. It is the base of healthy relationship. Being on break for elder ones at home, yes this is also good. It is one way to show our true respects, love and care to them. They need both physical and mental attention. When it is for your personal health reason, then you have to. Only when you are in good health you can think about achieving your goals. These are like the passing clouds. It will pass by, as time goes on and once again you can catch up from where you left. You can be happy with your decision of taking a break in your career. Getting back on track after break is difficult and scary. It is lot like taking your first job. When the break is longer and if you are into information technology then it is more difficult. Technology keeps changing day by day. The one that you had mastered may be obsolete. It affects your career growth. When you are on break for say 2 years, it means that you lose 2 yrs of experience and your seniority. The salary penalty for hopping off the career track is even higher. Studies show that, women taking break in career is substantially reduced due to all these factors. They somehow succeed to juggle between personal life and work. When you chose to presume your career after break, you sure need to do some homework to put yourself back on track. You really have be more confident to take up the challenge. Stay motivated. You need to plan ahead of all the other duties like organizing the child care etc. You need to concentrate on job hunting, Prepare well for the interviews. You can try several options when you want to get back to work: -Look for the companies that operate "family friendly" friendly policies. -See if you can work part-time and gradually raise the working hours. -Try work from home or freelance -If you have a business that your family is running, you can work with them. -Why is that we have to always work under somebody? Be the king! If you have the urge to start up your own business, this would be the right time. Put all your thoughts and ideas, get advice and support, plan well and hit it. Many persons at this stage opt for self employment. Handling career break in your resume It is always suggested that you show up the career break in your resume and not hide it by putting some fake experience. You explain them ahead that you were on break for the reason. In the interview, assure them that you are fit for the position and will work hard to do justice to it. If you are into technology, then learn the latest in your field. May be you can do a crash course from a authorised learning center. You can also do some recognized certification like Microsoft certification, Oracle certification, etc based on your domain of expertise. At home, You can design some small basic packages like payroll, online shopping or some dynamic websites etc so that it will help you to brush up your skills and also you can tell the interviewer that you were doing all these to be in touch with the technology. Taking career break, is not a full stop to career. You can get back to groove with a little effort and struggle. Believe in yourself and be confident. Analyze all possible options that will help you to manage both work and home. I read an article last month that said "The John F. Welch Technology Centre of General Electric (GE) in India's IT hub plans to hire women scientists and engineers keen to get back to work after a career break, the company said."We have chosen the Bangalore technology centre to roll out the on-ramping programme to exclusively hire women scientists and engineers ready to work after a break," GE global research head K. Murali said." So if women aspire to work after break, they sure can and the doors are still opened to them. Never give up!
