Eyes are often spoken of as the window of the body. The eyes are the important organs of our body that helps us to look at the world. In fact the eyes of a human being is much more than any window. The care for the eye is in the hands of the individual. Many people give very less care for the eyes. This can lead to early damage to the eyes and may end in loss of vision.

Care of the eyes is very important. This article also gives a few clues about when to meet an ophthalmologist to consult for eyeglasses.

Care of the eyes:

Regular check up:
A regular check up with an ophthalmologist will help in preventing major diseases of the eye. It will also help the person to protect and keep the eyes safe. A regular check up should be done at least once two years. For people with diabetes and other eye problems, the check up should be either yearly or more frequent depending on the advice given by the eye specialist.

Symptoms of eye problems: There are very varied symptoms that can be due t problems of the eye. These symptoms can be headache, indigestion, and eyestrain. Blurred vision is also a symptom of eye defect.

Need for eyeglasses:

1. Continually holding the book that you are reading less than twelve inches from your eyes may mean that your eyes are not normal. This may mean that there is a decrease in the vision. This may also mean that you have to wear eyeglasses.

2. Frequent headaches may be due to many reasons, but one of the most common reasons is due to eye problem that can be rectified by wearing eyeglasses.

3. Squinting while reading may also mean that there is some problem with the eye and eyeglasses can rectify the problem.

4. The other reasons for wearing eyeglasses include red and inflamed eyelids, slowness and difficulty in reading, crusts on the lids and sties. These symptoms may require eyeglasses to treat the problem. Eyeglasses are usually prescribed if the said symptoms persist and there is an abnormality detected in the vision in a routine eye check up.

Preventing eye problems: Eye complications can be prevented by proper lifestyle and also regular and balanced meal intake. While reading, the person should ensure that there is adequate amount of light falling on the area that is being read. This will reduce the strain on the eyes.

Food that is rich in Vitamin A is very necessary in the diet to be assured of healthy eyesight. The Vitamin can be found in yellow foods like carrots, pumpkin, papaya, egg yolk, ripe mango, butter and also green leafy vegetables.

Another important thing to remember is to keep hands, handkerchiefs away from the eye. These if not clean enough can cause infections of the eye. They may also cause spread of trachoma, which is a major eye disease.

Proper care of the eyes will help to prevent diseases of the eye.
