CONSTRUCTIVE CRITICISM AT WORKBY: Karthik | Category: Self Improvement | Post Date: 2009-07-20
Summary: For most of the people who're employed, the one aspect that keeps them occupied and preoccupied throughout their day-to-day lives is their office lives. We wake up every morning and get ready to go to our office, reach office and work for 8+ hours, leave the office with a plan for the next day. When so much time in a day is spent on thinking and planning for our office life, it's but imperative for us to brace ourselves for all that we would face there - criticism from peers and manager, for example: If there is one nine-lettered word, that most of us abhor, it will be nothing but -Criticism-. People are so averse to being criticized, immaterial of where, when and by whom, that the moment anyone lashes out a word of acerbic comment on them or their acts, they will be looked upon by the person at the receiving end as a -two-fanged- creature whose tongue is dipped in venom. Criticism has become more of a bete-noire at workplaces that most employees get depressed once their performance is open to criticism by others, especially from the people in the top rungs of management. But on the other hand, constructive criticism is not such a harsh treatment to be accorded such resentment and detestation. Constructive criticism serves the purpose of appraising the performance of the employees, when it is administered in the right spirit of reforming. In fact, constructive criticism is always welcome as a fruit of all seasons. Any employee would be put to ease if criticism is aimed at improving their productivity and core-job quality. It can even prove to be a morale-booster to many, as it comes, when it is most required. No two persons' capabilities match at any point in time. However, constructively criticizing their activities can go a long way in helping them realize where they stand and where they head towards. Constructive criticism subsumes many factors. It is a dynamic process of honing the skills of the employees and acts as a buffer against low productivity. The net result of any criticism process would be the emergence of good quality employees. It is indeed true that, in a bad environment, a good performer's quality goes down and in a good environment a bad performer's productivity shoots up. So, the onus of providing the employees with the right kind of corporate ambiance lies with the persons at the top-level of the management hierarchy. Constructive criticism can prove to be a boon to the employees as well as the company as such. While, it can help the employees in improving their over-all productivity, it is the company which stands to gain the most by cashing in on the improved work-performance of their employees. So it goes without saying that any criticism which is aimed at enhancing the quality of work can be a strong booster in a company. But caution should be taken to see that the measure of criticism remains at its safest level, for, just as there is a thin line running between praise and flattery, likewise, the line of distinction between criticism and causticity is very slim. Many companies suffer high attrition rates, mainly because the people working in the top levels of management are not in good terms with those at the bottom. This, in turn, is a huge loss-making affair to them, as they are forced to spend a lot of money in increasing the headcount, for having lost a sizeable number of skilled employees, by utterly failing to retain them. But the large chunk of this issue can be completely cut, if the practice of administering constructive criticisms becomes a part of the work culture. Therefore, it is high time many companies woke up to this call for constructive criticism. It really sounds pleasant when you are told, euphemistically, that you look good when your lovely lips are closed together, than experiencing a harsh feeling of being told to keep your mouth shut, isn't it..?
