COMMON MYTHS ABOUT ACNEBY: Swati | Category: Health and Fitness | Post Date: 2008-05-14
There may be a lot of things that we know about acne but are all those true? Here are some common myths about acne that will help u to learn some facts about the problem and treat it better. Myth #1: Acne is caused by poor hygiene. If u believe this myth and wash your skin too hard or frequently, you might worsen your acne. While some skin infections can be associated with acne but lack of cleanliness is not the real reason for acne outbreaks. The combination of oil and dead cells which produce acne are located beneath the skin's surface where it is impossible to clean it away. Washing your face twice daily with a mild soap will help but scrubbing too hard may worsen the problem. Myth #2: Acne is caused by diet or specific foods. Several studies and researches have been done on acne but no connections has been found between food you consume and acne. Therefore the myth that Chocolates, French fries, pizza, potato chips, sugar or several other foods cause acne is incorrect. However, it is true that healthy eating leads to a better and cleaner skin. Myth #3: Sunbathing or tanning is a good cure for acne. Exposure to the sun dries out excess oils from the skin, leading to short term improvement in acne but in the long run, the sun can make the skin dry and irritated, leading to more breakouts. There is scientific evidence that sun exposure damages the skin and increases the chance of skin cancer. Myth #4: Acne completes its course of time. The truth is that you can get rid of acne sooner. There are several acne treatments available over the counter and if this doesn't help, see a dermatologist. Myth #5: Stress causes acne. This is not true to some extent. The ordinary stress in day to day life does not lead to acne. However, severe stress that needs medical attention may be treated with strong medicines that may lead to acne as a side effect. If you think that you are suffering from acne due to stress related medication, see your doctor immediately. Myth #6: Popping pimples helps in getting rid of acne. Popping pimples may make them less noticeable for some time but the fact is that popping pimples may worsen acne by spreading the bacteria that is causing it. Popping can also lead to eventual scarring, which in severe cases, can be permanent. Myth #7: Makeup causes or worsens acne. Cosmetics that are labeled "noncomedogenic" or "nonacnegenic" are safe to use. Infact, some brands are made with ingredients that actually treat acne. However, some makeup products can clog the pores of the skin which can be bad for the health of your skin. Myth #8: Acne is only a teenage problem. Although acne is mostly common in teenagers, several adults too suffer from it. Acne generally clears up by the early 20s but some people experience acne for the first time as late as their 40s. Some people endure acne flare-ups their entire lives. Myth #9: Acne is related to sex. We've probably all heard that either celibacy or too much sex causes pimples. There is no evidence for this. There is a link between sexual activity and hormone production, but the relationship between sex and the production of sebum (the oily substance which combines with dead skin cells to cause acne) is not known. Stress and anger also affect hormone levels. Myth #10: The more medicine the better. Some people believe that if their acne gets worse they should just apply more medicine. That's a bad idea because medicines can be dangerous when taken in large quantities. Excess use of acne ointments may just irritate the skin further.
