Buying a Mini Laptop - Cost of Compact Mobile Internet LaptopsBY: Jessica | Category: Technology and Computers | Post Date: 2008-11-09
Last week I was looking around to buy a laptop, I was impressed by the pricing or Mini Laptops or Compact laptops or Mobile Internet Laptops. These computers are about 40% cheaper than standard laptops. The biggest difference - SIZE and CONFIGURATION. These Mini Laptops are less than 10 inch wide, some even as small as 7 inches wide. The biggest question arises - should I really buy this compact laptop or not? I did quite a bit of research and now I am sharing it with you. SIZE: As I mentioned earlier, the compact laptops have a smaller screen and the overall smaller size. These mini laptops are perfect for personal use, internet surfing and other smaller applications. Buy if you are planning to use this laptop only for internet use, they are PERFECT. The resolution of most of these is about 800 x 480 pixels ( or 1024 x 600 pixels). Therefore there will be a lot of vertical scrolling but overall you web-page will look fine on most websites. On the other hand if you plan to use it for business presentation, video gaming and applications that require better resolution, you will have a hard time. WEIGHT: The weight of Mini laptops can be as light as 2 pounds. As the technology enhances, this figure is likely to decrease. These are perfect to carry in your regular office bag, unlike conventional laptops which needed a separate case for them self or a majority of space of your office bag. BATTERY: Most mini laptops require a 6 cell or a 4 cell battery with a good battery life. In most of the regular laptops, there is an in built custom battery. For example Asus Eee PC 1000 weighs 2.9-pounds and gives a 7-hour battery life with a six-cell battery. Intel Atom processor about 2.5 watts of power, less than 1/10 of the 35 watts used by an Intel Core 2 Duo processor for excellent battery management. COST: A mini laptop will cost about $400 while a regular (15 inch laptop) costs around $700. Some even go upto $1500, with great features. OPERATING SYSTEM: Most Mini laptop these days come with a Linux or Windows XP OS. Most avoid Windows Vista because it's a memory hog. MacBook Air's are also getting popular. CPU: The CPU of Mini Laptops currently is quite pathetic to as low as 800-MHz CPU to just a few GHz. The CPU's are Intel's Atom or Intel Mobile CPU or other light power CPU's. MEMORY: Memory is cheap these days, you can get half GB of RAM to 2GB of memory depending on the price and brand. HARD DRIVE: A very limited hard-drive space but not too bad. Keyboard: Keyboard is small but very much workable, unless you have thick fingers (in hat case you will have to be more selective.) Extras: Most have an inbuilt 802.11b/g, ethernet, multiformat media slot, USB port some even have built-in camera and built-in microphone. JUST TO GIVE YOU AN IDEA, I AM WRITING CONFIGURATION FOR SOME LAPTOPS: Acer Aspire One 8.9-inch Mini Laptop (1.6 GHz Intel Atom N270 Processor, 1 GB RAM, 160 GB Hard Drive, XP Home, 6 Cell Battery) ASUS Eee PC 900HA 8.9-Inch Netbook (1.6 GHz Intel ATOM N270 Processor, 1 GB RAM, 160 GB Hard Drive, XP Home, 4 Cell Battery) ASUS Eee PC 1000HA 10-Inch Netbook (1.6 GHz Intel ATOM N270 Processor, 1 GB RAM, 160 GB Hard Drive, XP Home, 6 Cell Battery) HP Business Notebook 2133 Mini-Note PC- 8.9" WXGA Display-VIA C7-M ULV 1.6GHz, 128KB L2, 2GB DDR2 SDRAM, 120GB 7200rpm SATA, Wi-Fi- VIA Chrome 9, VGA camera, Gigabit NIC, 802.11a/b/g, Bluetooth, Windows Vista Business ASUS Eee PC 4G Notebook Asus Eee Pc Super Mobile Internet Device, Pearl White. 7" Wide LCD display, 512mb DDR2 Memory, 4GB Solid State Disk Storage, Preloaded with Linux operating system -Intel UMA Mobile Chipset HP Mini 1000, Intel(R) Atom(TM) Processor N270 (1.60GHz), 8.9" WSVGA LED (1024 x 600) , 512MB RAM, 8GB SSD, Intel(R) Graphics Media Accelerator 950, 802.11 b/g, HP Mini Webcam, HP Imprint Finish (Swirl), 3 Cell Battery, Color Matching Keyboard, Windows XP Home Sample - Detailed configuration of Acer Aspire One A150-1447 Netbook $400 Tech Specs Processor(s) Processor Mfr Intel Processor Speed 1.6GHz Processor Atom™ N270 Cache Cache standard, primary 0KB Cache standard, secondary 512KB Magnetic/Optical Drives Hard Drive 160 GB RAM RAM standard 1GB Display 8.9 active-matrix/TFT/XGA Display, maximum resolution 1024 x 600 Miscellaneous Network interface card included Yes NIC type Fast Ethernet Form factor mini-notebook OS Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition Pointing device type TouchPad Weight (lbs) 2.2 RAM Details RAM details 1GB (512MB onboard/512MB SODIMM slot) DDR2 533 SDRAM HD Details Hard Drive details 160GB hard drive Video Details Display and video details Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 950 NIC details Network interface details 10/100 LAN Wireless details 802.11b/g WLAN Battery Details six-cell battery ASUS Eee PC 4G Surf Notebook - $400 to $300 Tech Specs LCD Size / Type 7" Wide LCD Resolution 800x480 (~WVGA) LCD Type TFT Graphic Intel UMA Chipset Intel Mobile Chipset Processor Intel Mobile CPU Memory Onboard 512MB DDR2 S.S.D Storage (Solid-State Disk) 4GB OS Supported Linux Preloaded (Windows XP Compatible, Drivers included) Audio Hi-Definition Audio CODEC Microphone 1 Internal Microphone Speakers 2 Internal Stereo Speakers Audio Jack - Out (3.5mm) 1 Audio Jack - In (3.5mm) 1 Wireless Included 802.11 b/g LAN / Connector 10/100 Mbps / RJ-45 USB 2.0 ports 3 Memory Card Reader MMC/SD(SDHC) VGA Port 1 (D-sub 15 pin) Integrated Camera NO Mouse (USB) NO Inner Sleeve Case NO Battery 4 cell: 4400mAh Battery Life 2.8 hours AC Adapter Output 9.5V, 22W AC Adapter Input 100-240V AC, 50/60Hz universal Unit Weight 2.0 lbs (with Battery) Unit Dimensions (W x D x H) 8.86" x 6.30" x 0.79" ~ 1.26" Warranty 1 Year Warranty, (6 months for battery) With time these configurations are all set to improve at a much lower price.
