Brain tumors are very common nowadays. It is a tumor that forms within the skull. The tumor can be either malignant or benign. Benign tumors will not spread. Malignant tumors may spread to other parts of the body.

Benign brain tumors may cause some neurological symptoms, but once the tumors removed surgically, there may not be any new symptoms and the existing symptoms may also disappear.

Malignant brain tumors are not as simple to treat like the benign tumors. Malignant tumors should be treated immediately. The best method of treating them is to surgically remove the tumor. There are two types of surgeries usually done. In the conventional type, the skull is opened and the tumor is removed completely.

The other type of removing the tumor is by LASER therapy. The disadvantage with this method is that the tumor may not be completely removed and there can be growth from the remaining parts of the tumor.

The tumor when it is present can cause many neurological symptoms. Some of the most common symptoms are seizures, paralysis, and inability to do co coordinated movements. These symptoms in a patient may be transient or continuous. When the tumor is removed, the symptoms may completely disappear for some people.

Removal of the tumor by surgery has its own complications. The complications range from death during the surgery due to excessive bleeding to post operative infection. In spite of these risks, many patients with brain tumors undergo surgery because this seems to be the only treatment option possible. Even after surgery, the person has to undergo either chemotherapy or radiation therapy to make sure that there is no remaining vestiges of the tumor.

In spite of all these treatment efforts, there are some patients who will have a relapse of the tumor. This could be because the tumor was not removed fully during the surgery. The primary tumor in the brain may also cause secondary tumor in other parts of the body like lungs and other foci. Too many secondary tumors will be difficult to treat.

Early detection of the tumor will help in treating the patient better. If the tumor is detected late, it can lead to secondary tumors before the diagnosis. After surgery for tumor removal, the patient may have some remaining neurological symptoms like weakness of some parts of the body. Physical therapy to strengthen the muscles will help in rehabilitating the patient better.

Brain tumor can be a very challenging condition for the health care providers and a draining experience for the person affected.
