Book Banks in ChennaiBY: Archana | Category: Education | Post Date: 2009-08-02
Chennai is well known across the country for its Tamil population and its renowned Bhartanatyam dance. What the state is also well known for are the number of educational institutes in the engineering field in and around the city. With a large number of students enrolled in these colleges and pursuing engineering education in Chennai, a number of Book Banks provide students with whatever textbooks they require to complete their education at a very low cost. "Book Bank" was a concept that was introduced more than 10-15 years back in Chennai. The success of this concept and the benefits to the students has now caught up across the globe and being introduced in various countries including the US. How They Work? The book banks in Chennai operate by buying new textbooks in a bulk quantity allowing them to get a modest discount from the book's distibutors. These libraries then lend out the text books to students who might require them over a period of 4-5 years allowing them to generate to returns enough to keep their business running and allowing them to expand.. Members of these book banks retain these text books for their entire semester and return the books after their exams. All this for a very modest fee of just 80-100 rupees per book(even if the book costs more than 2000 Rupees!!) Benefits to Students? Students gain a lot on joining book banks in the city. While any engineering book costs the students anywhere upwards of 250 rupees to as high as even 2000 rupees, these book banks can rent out these books to students at a very nominal costs. The students also benefit as these become a one-stop shop for their books and they wouldnt need to search in other places. Leading Players? MV Book Bank is considered to be a leading player serving a large number of students in cities apart from Chennai. However, due to the vast expansion it suffered high operating costs and raised prices of the books it rents out allowing the students to consider other options. The company's website is www.mvbookbank.org Reach Book Bank and REC Book Bank are considered the other big players in the field with equally large number of books for students to choose from. Reach Book Bank's prices are the lowest in the market due to its efficient use of technology (it accepts orders only over the phone and internet) and deliver the books to the student's house. All this allows the company to enjoy low operating costs as a result of zero office space rent and very low employee costs. The student members of the book bank have acknowledged the ease with which they can obtain their books as compared to their friends who joined other book banks. The company's website is www.reachbookbank.com REC Book Bank is considered the 3rd largest currently though it has been around for an equal number of years as the others. This was predominantly because the company failed to expand and tap technology fast enough to capture the growing market. It has recently launched its website and is looking to expand further in the future. The company's website is www.recbookbank.com. Threat? Not really any. Since educational costs are rising and also since these book banks have a reputed brand name, they have been growing well and others in the field have a very poor reputation or are almost non existant.
