Singapore is a small island-country located in Southeast Asia, just south of Malaysia. It is among the most modern and prosperous nations in Asia. It is also the busiest sea/ship port in the world. Singapore is well equipped with excellent transportation system, subways, shopping malls, skyscrapers and most modern amenities. You will find people from all over the world with the biggest groups being the Malay, Chinese and Indian. BEST PLACES TO SEE IN SINGAPORE: 1. Sentosa Island: This is a tiny island located just south of the Singapore mainland and is a great place for tourists. You need at least 1 day to visit this place, preferably 2 days to enjoy things at a slow pace. You can reach here either by ground transportation or preferably take the electronic cable car to enjoy the mesmerizing views of the Island and the nearby areas. Best places to see in Sentosa island areUnderwater world, Dolphin lagoon, Merlion park area, Butterfly Park & Insect Kingdom Museum, Animal & Bird encounters, Laser & musical fountain show, Fort Siloso Tour, Herb & Spice Garden, Natures walk, Beaches and if you like golf, there are two golf courses as well in Sentosa. 2. Chinatown: It is the traditional Chinese quarters of town which preserves it's Chinese style charm. During Chinese New Year, the whole of Chinatown is lit up very nicely. There are several Chinese styled shops, the most popular attractions include Sri Mariamman Temple, Buddha Tooth Relic Temple, Thian Hock Keng Temple and Jamae Mosque. 3. Little India: It represents the vibrant and colourful Indian culture and community in Singapore. You will see many women dressed in traditional clothes, there are several small shops selling clothes, gifts items, temple garlands, jewellery and even spices. Mustafa Centre is the most popular shopping place in this area. 4. Arab Street: Arab Street provides a very authentic glimpse into the Muslim way of life. This is also a great place to eat authentic Arab and Pakistani food. The Sultan's Mosque is the most famous building in the area. You can shop for leather goods, jewellery, perfumes, clothes and hand-beaten brass utensils on this street. 5. Raffles Hotel Plaza: This is a very famous hotel of Singapore with a great past. There is also a shopping arcade with over 75 shops. 6. Orchard Road: (My Favourite) Orchard Road is the main shopping area in Singapore and has some of the tallest skyscrapers, best shops, malls and hotels that you can find in Singapore. Singapore's nightlife is best around south of Orchard Road. There are places for both premier and budget shopping. You will find ethnic collectibles, hand woven carpets, souvenirs and textiles. Latest electronics and top-notch international designer labels. 7. Singapore Zoo and Night Safari: Singapore Zoo is located in the forest area of central Singapore, almost next to the Night Safari. The zoo has more than 150 different species living in spacious and comfortable enclosures. Night safari has over 130 different species, over two-thirds of them are endangered species. The ambience of the Night Safari is kept as if its a full moon night for better visibility without disturbing animals in their natural habitats. 8. Jurong BirdPark: This bird park has the largest number of birds compared to any bird park of the world and is the second largest in land area. There are more than 8,000 birds and 600 species, out of which about 30 are endangered species. It also has the world's tallest artificial/man made waterfall measuring 30 meters in height. 9. Botanical and Orchard Gardens: These gardens are spread over a 52 hectare land and have an amazing diversity of Flora and Fauna with more than 600,000 plant preserved specimens. It consists of about 3000 tropical and subtropical plant species. Other popular tourist places to see include Clark Quay, National Museum, Parliament House, Supreme Court & City Hall. SHOPPING IN SINGAPORE: You will find a high concentration of malls around orchard road and MARINA BAY. You can also decide to do authentic shopping at Little India, Arab Street and Chinatown. WATER AND CLEANLINESS: The drinking and sanitation standards of Singapore are very high and the tap water is considered safe for drinking in most places. You cannot throw garbage on road, instead always use a nearby trashcan. WEATHER: Singapore has a tropical climate and the temperatures usually remains between 24°C to 31°C ( 76°F to 89°F ) all year long. Humidity is high all year long, therefore it can feel hotter than what it actually is. Rain can come any time and does not last long, but the main monsoon season occurs from November to January. MEDICAL FACILITIES: The medical facilities of Singapore are very high and are comparable to those in western countries. You will find big hospitals to smaller medical clinics too. You will be eligible for tax refund of your purchases if you are a tourist and shop from a GST Tax free shopping. Refunds can be taken at from customs officials at Changi Airport.
