Bargain shopping tips - Buy cheap - Finding great dealsBY: Jessica | Category: Shopping | Post Date: 2008-10-07
A little homework can save you big bucks while shopping, you can find nice branded items for dirt cheap. You just need to find those deals a bit smartly. Bargain hunting can be fun and can save you thousands of dollars every year. 1. Do your homework: (say buying a Digital Camera) Number one rule of shopping is to decide what are "must haves" and what are "nice to haves". Fix a budget and make sure that you are not oversold in the last minute. For example if you want to buy a nice digital camera, you want that it should be atleast 5 megapixels with 2 GB of Memory card and you have a budget of $250. When you go to a store look around what your possible choices are, may be a camera comes with an inbuilt Memory card or with a free camera cover. You do not want influenced by the salesman and then come back home with a massive 10 megapixels camera for $450 and then later regret. Most salesmen have a commission baked in the sale, bigger the sale, better for them ... (Not necessarily for you !!). 2. Never go for the latest model: (say buying a cellular phone like iPhone) Latest models and gadgets are costliest during the launch and remain that way until a little better next version comes out, after that the price falls significantly. Mostly the functional difference in both versions is so less that you will be just fine with the prior version itself. Remember when the iPods were just launched, they were so costly, within months their prices dropped once the hype was over. Similarly the "Apple iPhone" which was launched for $400 when it was super hot, as it became more and more common and other competitive phones were launched, the price of even the next generation iPhone dropped to $200. 3. Look around: (say buying a Big Screen Plasma TV) When buying big ticket items like a Large Screen Plasma TV, always visit multiple stores and compare prices. Some outlets will match their competitors lowest price deals and even deliver & install it for free. Therefore never just go to one store, always look around. Money is hard earned, then whay not buy the same stuff for cheap. 4. Wait for holiday season: (say shopping for clothes) Stores will cut prices of most items including clothes during long weekends. Traditionally the prices are lowest just after the Christmas. Look for all those great deals. You will easily find perfectly good, yet cheap clothes 50-75% off during holiday shopping season, so buy cheap !! 5. Use Coupons: ( say buying baby diapers) Several stores will send you special discount coupons. Save those and buy stuff for cheap. For example watch out for coupons from Costco for baby diapers, car tires and all sort of things. Sign up for coupons from a store which carries items that are of your interest. 6. Become a member of a store ( say Groccery ) Some stores like Albertsons, Safeway, Sams Club etc .. offer free membership cards and you can find member-only deals on Groceries, liquor and bakery. Stores like Macys, Kohls etc may also offer in store membership/credit card and offer great member-only deals. 7. Go on Internet (Say buying a computer laptop) Internet stores do not have the huge infrastructure needed by regular stores, they just have a warehouse and fewer employees. Online stores often have far better deals than your regular brick and motar stores. Shopping online can save big money, visit stores like Amazon, Buy.com, Deals2buy.com, eBay.com and more. Many stores offer free shipping too. If you are concerned about returns, many online stores have a good return policy and if you are buying stuff from Walmart.com, target.com - they will often give an option to return the item in local store itself. I prefer shopping only on well known secure and reliable online stores only. 8. Mail-in-rebates About half of people totally forget about mail-in-rebate or fill it incorrectly. Never forget them otherwise your deal will not be such an amazing pick anymore. 9. Watch for Store closings: ( say furniture) Many stores will just sell their inventory for rock bottom prices when they are going out of business. Recently a friend of mine got a furniture from 'Levitz store closing' for about 70% off. 10. Off Season Shopping: Buying sweaters when winters are about to get over or summer clothes when winter is about to start, it can land you in amazingly cheap deals. Simply hang them in your closet and use it next year. 11. Buy Used: Garage sales, Flea Markets and Thrift Stores can often carry almost brand new stuff for really dirt cheap prices. Watch those cheap items too. 12. Bargain: ( not applicable always) If you are buying items like cars in which bargain is allowed, then do bargain and do it hard. 13. Tax free days: Some states will offer special sales tax free shopping days (like Texas), watch for those days and find great bargains and pay no sales tax. 14. Go to One Dollar Stores: Stores like Dollar tree, 99 cents store and other bargain stores will often carry very useful items at very cheap price. 15. AVOID IMPULSE SHOPPING: We often buy expensive stuff just because we want it at that very moment, try to avoid it. We all do impulse shopping but keep a check on it.
