Ban on smoking in public is a good measure taken by the Government of India. Besides discouraging the smoker itself, it has helped to save the health of so called passive smokers. Most of the IT and BPO companies had the smoking zone in the office premises. People who enjoy smoking use to gather there along with their non-smoking friends, especially with their girl friends at work. This meeting place was indirectly creating lot of passive smokers. In fact the passive smokers were unknowingly worsening their health just for accompanying the smokers during their smoking session.

But the number of cigarettes people smoke has not reduced significantly inspite of government's ban of smoking in public places. When something is banned many people find even more passion to go for it. So it has been a trend with almost all the smokers coming outside their office premises to stand on street and smoke. Now instead of the people at office, the people walking on the street became the passive smokers. These smoking crowds on the street even cause the disturbances to the traffic and others try to avoid the smoke exhaled by these people. It has even made young individuals to see the bad culture of IT and BPO employees gathering in groups and smoking. It could adversely influence them to follow such a smoking culture.

IT / BPO companies do not care because because what happens outside the office is not a matter of concern to them. They have become compliant by shutting off public smoking floors in their campus.

In fact the ban on smoking has made the smoking employees to have a reason to spend the time outside the office premises. It has been reducing the production hours on the office floors. When a smoker when feels like smoking, he obviously takes the whole smokers team outside the office premise (to accompany him in then smoking). This practice has been even giving good business to the shops outside the IT and BPO office premises.
