BIM Positioning; The 2D world will never be the same.BY: bimpositioning | Category: Technology and Computers | Post Date: 2009-09-15
In the construction industry, the only way to send information from the main office to the field was to put it on a piece of paper, relying on your field crews to interpret those drawings to create what is intended to go in the ground and become what is supposed to be a building of some kind. I have watched so many companies over the years create magnificent 3D models of a buildings; MEP, walls, and steel, that it made the hair on the back of my neck stand on end to see them take that information and place it on a piece of white paper only to get marked up and destroyed in the field. This does not have to happen anymore...in fact, it never has had to happen. It's just the way things have been done since the beginning of time. I would like to make it known, that there is a way to bridge that gap, electronically, from the office to the construction trailer. The age of the BIM or building information model, is here to stay and those who are not up to speed will fall behind. However, BIM is so complex and has so much depth. What I am focusing on is taking the AutoCad drawing and leaving it in its electronic, perfect form, and transferring that information to the field on a hand held computer. What am I talking about? Robotic total stations. Relying on the AutoCad drawing is what we do in the first place. If you have a company that doesn't produce good drawings, it's not the program, it's the designer. That drawing is made up of hundreds of thousands tiny little vectors or coordinates that can be transferred to match up with what is real time in the field. BIM Positioning is the process by which we find that information in the field with a total station. How does 1/16th of an inch accuracy suit you? How does 60% increase in productivity or 4 times faster sound? Layout is the key to BIM in the field. If we don't know exactly where it belongs, then we will put it in the wrong place...as we are doing everyday. Coring, chipping, saw cutting; do these words ring a bell? It become a thing of the past and so will you if you don't get on board with this process. Hundreds of contracting firms nationwide are already investing in this. Why? Because it works that's why! BIM Positioning is the fore front of every project. It doesn't stop there. So we can find out where it goes in the field by transferring information from the office to the field; how about transferring it from the field to the office! Laser scanning is providing the fastest AS-Builts and most accurate Reverse Engineered drawings. No more chicken scratch and lame drawings. This is the real thing. A 3D image, measurable to millimeter accuracy. Try doing that with a tape measure. This in turn also becomes an excellent deliverable for the GC and the owner. BIM Positioning is changing the way we do things in the field. Get up to speed or get left behind.
