It is really a welcoming change that everywhere there is a talk about donation of organs and it is the hot topic in the internet also. Helping others when we live is a great thing but there are no words to appreciate those who help others after death. The donor of organs should intimate his wish to others before death so that he can help others after death.

In 1954 when kidney transplantation was done for the first time in America, people came to know about donation of organs. The awareness regarding donation of organs has not taken place in many countries still. Recently, the doctor parents of the boy named Hidendran at Chennai, India agreed to donate the organs of his body, thus creating awareness in the minds of many people when the media gave publicity through newspaper, magazines, radio and TV.

How organ donation works:
When it is confirmed that brain death has taken place, the doctors will remove other organs from the body which can be transplanted into the body of those in need, without much delay. The recipient should be made available at that place immediately. The organs are removed from the dying person, preserved by experienced doctors and the operation for recipient is made for receiving the organs. Periodical medical check up will be conducted until the organs are accepted by the body of the recipient.

Already many people know about blood donation and eye donation but donation of other organs is not very familiar. Some people come forward to donate kidney. The diabetic patients and those who suffer from cancer will not be able to donate their organs. Much advancement has taken place in the field of medical science and research is still going on about transplantation of organs. There is a great demand for dead bodies for medical education and research.
Nobody knows how long we will survive. We should understand that we will die one day definitely and there is no use in getting buried or burnt after death. It is a noble act to donate our organs after death. If we think about the persons who are suffering, rather dying due to non-availability of donors of organs, we will definitely change our mind and give our willingness, for donation of organs.
The family members should be informed about the willingness given for donation of organs. If we register for organ donation, they will give a donor card, which we have to keep with us always. The organs such as heart, kidneys, pancreas, liver, intestines are suitable for donation.

The tissues such as skin, bone marrow, heart valves and cornea can also be transplanted. The organs of one person can save the life of 8 persons. The family members of the deceased person who has given option for organ donation, need not spend money for transplantation. The family members should be convinced well so that they can not refuse to cooperate afterwards.

More organ donors needed:
Due to less awareness among common people regarding organ donation, only very few donors are available but number of persons waiting for organs is more comparatively. The person living nearby is given priority first. Depending upon the urgency of need, some others may also be given a chance.
The media can very well play a good role to advertise properly for the noble cause of donating organs. Some superstitious beliefs prevent people from donating organs. The educated people can educate others properly about donation of organs. In the educational institutes, the students may be motivated and taught about this act which saves the lives of many persons. The charitable institutes may bring light to the society the pros and cons about the donation of organs. It is an accepted fact that most of the people agreed for donation of organs, when poll was taken. By the unselfish act of donating organs, we can make a purpose in our life and we will get a satisfaction that we can also do something good to the society. Please come forward and help those who are in need.

Is Organ Donation Legal in India?
Yes, Since the passing of the legislation in India, entitled, 'Transplantation of Human Organ (THO) Act' in 1994, it has been possible to undertake multi-organ transplant activity from brain dead donors. Sale / purchase of human organs is legally prohibited. According to the Act, the unrelated donor has to file an affidavit in the court of a magistrate stating that the organ is being donated out of affection. After which the donor has to undergo number of tests before the actual transplant takes place. In brain death organ donation, the ventilator is continued until the required organs are removed.

Fight the illegal human organs trafficking
The person who gives the organ is called the donor while the one who receives is called the recipient. Proposed amendments in organ donation law include increase transparency in transplantation procedures and to provide deterrent penalties for violation of the law and further actions to stop illegal activities of human organs trafficking. In reality India has a considerable illegal trade in human organs.
