Autism - Developmental disability of a physically challengedBY: JNLakshmi | Category: Health and Fitness | Post Date: 2008-10-09
My husband's nephew is unfortunately a victim of autism. The pain, the kid and his family goes through is physically exhausting and emotionally draining. No one really knows the cause of autism. In his case, the prediction(what they talk within the family) is that it may be due inherited genes by 'congenital marriage', where the affected kids parents and his grand parents are married within the close relation. He was diagnosed with it at the age of 4, now he is 12 years old any yet does not behave like the other kids of his age. I would like to give an insight of Autism. Autism is the brain disorder, that causes development disability. The person with autism typically show difficulties in verbal and non-verbal communication, social interactions. It has been even described as "locked inside oneself", locked in their own worlds. Cause: This is still unknown, and experts do not have an answer for this. They say that it is probably caused by a combination of genetic and environmental factors. Research are going on several controversial topics like is autism caused by genetic, lack of immunity, food allergy, vaccines, metabolic factors or poor nutrition. Characteristics of autism: The behaviour signs of autism may or may not be apparent in the infant stage of a child, but usually become obvious during early childhood. Autism generally sets in before the age of three. For some, the diagnosis may come as a complete surprise. Autism affects individuals differently at varying levels. Autism makes the patients vulnerable to all types of sensors. They do not generally show the expected behaviour. The signs of autism given below may not be common to all the affected ones. - delay or does not reach milestones in the developmental infant stage - failure to bond even with parents - the absence of communication or basic interaction - incapable of showing emotions or attachment - lack of expressions and normal gestures - limited imaginative play - not interested in playing with other children - Having odd movement patterns - remain silent most of the time - visual perception disorders - repetitive behaviour - clamping hands on ears. - flapping their arms - no attention to the surroundings - staring at a particular object for a long time - not making an eye contact - does not have fine and gross motor skills - spinning around in circles - unconcerned about the danger - does not respond to others - does not walk normally, due to rounded feet - may be fascinated by some action, like spinning of objects Treatment: There is no particular treatment for this disorder.Early intervention has an effective impact on reducing the symptoms and respond well to highly structured and specialized programs. The traditional approach for a child with autism includes special education and behavioral management. Speech therapy, behavioral treatment, biomedical treatment, physical exercises, massaging ,teaching of sign language to help them communicate. School-based, individualized, special education is usually available for children. Autistic children, the physically challenged ones can have hope for a better life through such therapy and lifestyle adjustment.
