Astronomy For Dummies - Astronomy For BeginnersBY: informationishere | Category: Education | Post Date: 2008-07-27
"Twinkle Twinkle little star How I wonder what you are" But did you ever wonder? Have you ever been fascinated by scintillating night panorama full of specks of light winking at you all the time? Have you ever noticed those tiny dots on the dark black sheet on the universe? Thousands of suns sitting far far away. That is the beauty of this whole field of astronomy. We can know whats going on there, sitting here on a meagre piece of land millions of times smaller than them. Well, consider this article as your first lesson on astronomy. You would have all read about Ursa Major (The Big Dipper) and Orion (The Hunter). Maybe you would have spotted them in the sky, traced out their shape and tried to imagine the bear and the hunter. If you haven't, then I would recommend you go out in the open and try it once. You will find the Big Dipper in the norther direction. Try to locate it. In the exact north direction, we have our pole star or the northern star. You can find the pole star by extending the line joining the first two stars of the Big Dipper in northern direction. Before we go any further, lets look at some terms. The ZENITH is the point directly above you in the sky. You can get the directions east , west and south when you know the north direction. Facing north, east is towards your right hand and west towards your left hand. South direction is behind you. You may like to refer a star map to locate the constellations. Star maps are easily available on the internet. Once you have them, you can try picking out the constellations. Print the map and take it to the observation site. Hold it above your head as if you are fixing it on the sky. Then, orient the map such that Big dipper in the map looks as it is in the sky. The relative positions of stars in the sky remains the same. So, you can try locating famous constellations. To start with, try Leo, Bootes, Virgo, Auriga, Gemini, Hercules. You can make simple rules for locating these constellations. For example, Leo can be located by joining the first two stars in the Big Dipper and tracing the line backwards till you get to a reasonably bright star. Try identifying as many constellations as you can. With practice, you will not need a map to locate these constellations. And you can also boast about it among your friends. If this article attracts sufficient traffic, I will continue my lessons on astronomy.
