Buses are one of the cheapest transport facilities in Asia. The advantages of traveling by buses are many. They transport people and things to every nook and corner of the countryside. They can also ply up the hills.

Reason why buses are popular in Asia:

1. Railway services are not present to many places,
especially the remote areas. Air travel is too costly for the people to use. Buses are the most economical for people to travel.

2. They can take many people in them. Smaller vehicles like cars may not be a viable option for the lower socio economic group people. So most of the buses are full and even some people travel on top of the buses.

3. Small operators privately own buses. This makes buses a lucrative investment for the bus owners who make a huge profit. So they ply many buses on various routes.

This being the fact, most of Asian buses are overcrowded and there are a host of other problems leading to an increased number of accidents. This has resulted in many deaths and permanent disabilities.

Reasons for bus accidents:

1. Drivers:
The main cause of accidents is the drivers. These drivers are very fast while they negotiate turns or hilly terrain. These drivers are also insufficiently trained and are heavily overworked. Some of the drivers drive under the influence of alcohol. This is because of lack of any stringent authority in many places. So drivers and human error is the main cause of accidents.

2. Infrastructure: Poor roads and bad maintenance leads to very poor quality roads with many potholes. This is another reason for the many accidents that occur on Asian roads. If the governments improve the infrastructure, it can help to decrease the number of fatalities caused due to road accidents involving buses.

3. Overcrowding: The population is too high and the facilities are less. In the absence of any other mode of transport, the buses are overcrowded. This is another reason for the bus accidents. Improving the quality and frequency of buses may prevent this. The motive of profit causes private bus owners to fill their buses to capacity.

To prevent the many bus accidents, the government and the people should make concerted efforts to improve the public transport system. Stringent laws governing private operations will also help in improving the bus services. These are some of the simple interventions that can save the lives of hundreds of bus passengers every year.
