Are your children becoming couch potato: Outdoor games & activitiesBY: Jessica | Category: Family | Post Date: 2008-08-19
It is very unfortunate that children these days are more interested in watching TV, browsing internet, online dating, chatting & texting on cellphone, playing video games and in some cases they may be even stressed out with their academic activities. It is very important for kids to go outdoors and play as this is the natural behaviour of human beings, there is even a term which has been introduced recently called the "Nature deficit disorder" defining the lack of time spent by kids for outdoors activity. This is a very serious problem which many parents tend to overlook and can lead to long term mental, health and physical disorders. Don't let your children become a couch potato, insist them to get up, get out and play outdoors. People who think that walking in shopping malls is good enough, well it is not true in most cases. We need fresh air and exercise for good health and a fresh mind. Parents should take this opportunity to get some exercise themself and spending time outdoors together actually leads to a better family bonding. It will also help us to melt any extra fat sitting in our bodies. Some ideas on how to make kids go out and do outdoor activities: 1. Take your children out for a hike, its fun for everyone. 2. Encourage them to play games that require significant physical activity and running, like soccer (football), swimming, tennis and aerobics. 3. Visit a nearby national park and learn about various species. 4. Bicycle, Skipping and aerobics. 5. Encourage children to participate in gardening activities. 6. Nature activities like Bird-Watching, Treasure Hunt and Nature Hunt. 7. Household activities like Car Washing, Pet Grooming, Painting or cleaning the backyard. It is important to tell kids about the safety and other general ethics they should follow. Additionally consider these: 1. Do not buy video games. 2. Limit the time children can spend on their computer. 3. Avoid giving cell phone or give an ugly (and big size) cellphone which discourages them to use it in front of their friends, they will use it only when it's an emergency. Consider a prepaid phone is your child is not disciplined for a sensible cell phone use. 4. Encourage kids to make friends with other kids who are active too. 5. Indoor games like basket ball, ping pong (table tennis) etc .. are much better than indoor games which require you to just sit and play. 6. Be a role model, take your kids out for a tennis game with you ( or swimming, walk etc.).
