The most common question we come across when we meet new people or attend a party, "Are you a vegetarian or non-vegetarian?" We often hear, people saying, "we are vegetarians, pure vegetarians." If you tend to say that next time, just hold on, there are few facts you need to know! Do you consume dairy products like milk, butter, ghee etc then you cannot label yourself as 'pure vegetarians' You are a semi-vegetarian! • Actually, pure vegetarians are the people who do not eat meat, eggs or dairy products. yes, they do not even consume any dairy products. • Those who consume only dairy products are called lacto vegetarians. • Those who eat eggs are called ovo-vegetarians. • The debate on whether egg comes under the category vegetarian or non-vegetarian has been going on since ages. What is a vegetable? Vegetable, is plant or part of plant taken as food. So,egg is definitely not a vegetable! Vegetarianism is usually used in synonymous with lacto-ovo-vegetarianism. If you wonder, if any one are pure vegetarians. Few people in various countries indeed are. One more question that arises is do the products we buy are pure vegetarian. Because they use different oils from not only vegetables but also fish oil. So the individual have to check the ingredients before buying a particular product. India has a system of marking edible products made from only vegetarian ingredients, with a green dot in a green square. A mark of a brown dot in a brown square conveys that some animal based ingredients were used . Even medicines are similarly marked,a well-known Omega-3 capsule made from flax seeds is marked with a red dot as the capsule uses non-vegetarian. These days, people are opting for vegetarian food for other than religious beliefs like conscious on health and diet, to lose weight, due to love for animals, animal rights etc. It all depends on the individual perception, but eat well and stay fit! World vegetarian day is celebrated on October 1st.
