Antibiotics are powerful medicines used for treating many serious and life-threatening infectious diseases after fighting with bacterial infections. Antibiotics can save lives when used properly. They either kill bacteria or keep them from reproducing. They do not fight infections caused by viruses, such as colds, flu, coughs, bronchitis, sore throats etc. Proper and safe use of antibiotics is important. Antibiotics are the first line of defense against many infections. But overuse or misuse of antibiotics can cause more harm than good. Each time we take antibiotics, it increases the chances that bacteria in our body will be able to resist them. Later, we could get or spread an infection that antibiotics cannot cure and it becomes severe. Therefore, when you take antibiotics, follow the directions carefully. It is important to finish the medicine even if we feel better. Do not save antibiotics for later or use other's prescription. Using antibiotics too often or incorrectly is a major cause of the increase in resistant bacteria. Proper and safe use of antibiotics includes: 1. Understand when antibiotics should be used. 2. Don't pressure your doctor for antibiotics if you have a viral illness. 3. Take antibiotics exactly as prescribed. 4. Never take antibiotics without a prescription. 5. Protect yourself from infection in the first place.
