Ankle injury: Signs, symptoms, prevention and treatment.

Ankle injury is a common injury that occurs in many people. There are some very minor injuries of the ankle that are treated at home. At some times, the injury can be very severe. This might need more treatment that includes hospitalization and even surgery. The severity of the injury actually decides the treatment that has to be provided to the patient.

There are various reasons for the ankle injury. The most common reasons can include falls, wearing high heeled shoes and also sports injuries. The structure that is damaged in the ankle can also vary. The most common structures that are involved can be muscles, ligaments, tendons and even bones.

The various reasons for the injury to the ankle can be:

1. Sports injuries:
These are usually high velocity injuries where the injured ankle can even be broken. The ankle can be twisted during a fall and that may be the reason for the injury.

2. Shoes: Shoes are a very important cause of injury to the ankle. The shoes of a person can be very tight causing the fall, though the common cause of ankle injury due to shoes is the high heels that women wear.

Signs and Symptoms of ankle pain:

1. Pain:
Pain is the most common sign of ankle pain. The pain is because of the injury that has occurred to the internal tissues including the muscles, tendons and even the ligaments. In fact the ligaments are the most commonly affected tissues because the ligaments are the first line of protection in the ankle. So the pain usually occurs in people with ankle injuries.

2. Swelling: The other important thing that occurs in the people with ankle injury is the swelling. This is the starting of the healing process where the swelling signifies that there is increased blood supply to the area.
3. Loss of function: Almost all people with the ankle injury will not be able to walk immediately. This is the reason that ankle injuries cause loss of function in the person.

Prevention of ankle injuries:

The prevention of ankle injuries include wearing footwear that does not have high heels. The high heels are the common causes of falls. The individual who has a risk of ankle injury should be extra careful. Contact sports should be played with adequate protection to the ankle. These are the most important methods of preventing ankle injuries.

Treatment of ankle injuries:

There are various treatments that are involved in the treatment of ankle injuries. The first and most immediate treatment after an ankle injury is the application of ice packs over the area that was injured. The ice packs can be applied two to three times a day. This will initially decrease the swelling over the affected area. After application of ice over the area, compression and elevation are also very important in the treatment of the ankle injury. Rest is also important to heal the injury. In cases of fractures, total contact casts are the treatment that is necessary.
