Advice for daughters - Relationship between mother and daughter

By: mandeep - Article Submitted on: 2008-10-27

Part of being a nurturing and loving mother is having to be a disciplinarian, too. But once a daughter becomes an adult and establishes her own independence, a mother-daughter relationship tends to evolve into more of a friendship. Her role doesn’t entirely change – she is probably still your biggest fan, but your relationship will mature as you mature.

The older you get and the more life experiences you get under your belt, the more you will become surprised at how your relationship changes. Take this advice for daughters on how to improve your ever-changing relationship with your mother:

1. Involve your mom in your life: Your mom may want to spend more time with you but doesn’t want to feel like she’s imposing. She knows you have your own life, but maybe she wants to feel a little more a part of it. Take part in mother-daughter activities, which enriches the relationship more than you may think. Great mother-daughter activities can be as simple as shopping, golfing or taking a ceramics class.

2. How do other people see her? Your mom may be the rock in her group of friends or is the most loving and giving wife to your father. Her role in life is not just as mom, but as a more dynamic woman. Her past and present experiences and how she deals with them ultimately defines her.

3. Remember that she’ll always be your mommy: Your mom is the one who raised you, and no matter what age you turn or what decade of life she enters into, she will always be your mommy. Treat her with the respect and dignity she deserves, and remember to thank her for being the great “mommy” and the great “mother” she has been all these years.
