There are thousands of languages that are spoken around the world. One of the most common and simplest languages is English. It has only 26 alphabets. The number of alphabets may be limited, but the words that are present in the English language abound. In fact the language is very common around the world and millions of people speak English either as their first language or their second language. Each language caters to the communication needs of people in their own surroundings. These languages developed because of the ancient day isolation, where people from one area could not travel as easily as we do these days. This reason was the main cause for the development of thousands of languages. Many tribal people in different parts of the world have their own language though the people who speak those languages may number less than ten in some cases. There are a lot of languages that are specific to certain countries, though English has become the only language that is beyond all these barriers and has been used in various forms and in various dialects. People from each country speak English in a different accent. This apart, there are various benefits of being multi lingual. People who know more than one language are called as multilingual. Advantages of being multilingual: 1. Communication: If a person is multi lingual, the communication is very easy and even if the person travels to a country which is not his own, by knowing the language, the individual is able to communicate and feels no difficulty in travel and other needs. This is the most basic benefit of knowing more than one language. 2. Income generation potential: The individual who knows more than one language is able to earn more because of various job opportunities in different countries. They have additional income generation potential if they work in a set up where the translation of various languages is essential. In internet these days, there are various opportunities for people who know more than one language. 3. Recreation: The person who is multi lingual is able to watch programs in various languages on television. Even while travelling to another country, the individual is able to know the current happenings around the world by watching News in another language that is available. So the person who knows more than one language has a greater chance of watching a variety of programs on television. 4. Jobs: There are various job opportunities for people who know more than one language. Jobs that include a lot of traveling to various countries are always on the look out for people who know more than one language. The companies that have multinational presence will benefit a lot from employing people who are multi lingual. These are only some of the benefits of knowing more than one language. The individual benefits more by knowing languages that are widely spoken and also by learning languages that are very important in the particular geographical context. It is always beneficial to teach children various languages as their minds are receptive when they are young.
