Addiction to alcohol: Health problems due to alcohol intake

Alcohol and cigarette smoking are the two most common addictions that can be seen in people around the world. Other than these, drug addiction is also common. Of all these three addictions, alcoholism causes more social problems than the other two. This is because most addicts to cigarette and drugs inflict damage to themselves, but those who are addicted to alcohol not only cause damage to their body, but also cause social and family problems because of their drinking.

There are also many health problems that are common in people who are addicted to alcohol. This article gives a list of problems that people who are alcohol addicts can face.

1. Stroke: Stroke is also called as cerebro vascular accidents. These are conditions in which the individual who gets drunk or intoxicated on alcohol has a high risk of decreased blood supply to the brain. Chronic alcoholics especially are prone to get stroke. This can even be fatal at times. Even in those in whom this condition is not fatal, it can cause severe disabilities including loss of memory, loss the use of one of the extremities.

2. Liver disease: Chronic alcoholics also can get liver problems. Mild liver problems including jaundice are common. In severe cases and chronic alcoholics, the liver may be damaged completely and this can cause the person to have Liver cirrhosis. This is again a near fatal condition and many people die because of this disease. Only a lucky few survive after getting liver cirrhosis. In this condition even medicines cannot be given because the liver has to metabolize the medicines and because the liver is affected, it will increase the toxicity on taking medicines.

3. Psychological problems: In those who take alcohol continuously, there is a high risk of emotional and psychological problems. This is because of the toxic effects of the alcohol on the brain. The toxicity can lead to the person not knowing what is happening.

4. Accidents: Though this is not a disease, it is a common occurrence in those who have been addicted to alcohol. A number of accidents around the world are caused because of drunken drivers. These people are a menace to themselves and also the other commuters on the roads.

5. Poisoning: There are also various cases of poisoning because of spurious liquor that are consumed in many developing countries. The producers of this alcohol, which are not legal, add ethanol and other such stuff to the alcohol. This is deadly and causes many deaths and also ill health to hundreds of people every year.

6. Skin problems: Drinking alcohol-based products that are very old can some times cause rashes to form on the skin. This is also a common disease that is seen in people who drink alcohol regularly.

These are the various severe conditions that can arise out of drinking alcohol. It is better to avoid drinking alcohol to prevent the health problems that arise due to drinking alcohol. It will help the individual as well as the family and also the community.
