Still today, when someone is asked ‘So, what do have you planned for your future?' and the one concerned replies ‘I'm going to be an actor', the most frequent and expected answer is ‘Come on, I asked that on a serious note!'

A bright career no longer means being an engineer, lawyer or a doctor alone. Life has moved ahead, and so has career options. Today apart from media, which is a hot favorite amongst the young, acting is one of the most sought after aspect when it comes to ambitions and future. For those who really aspire to become an actor, and look at it as a profession, it is time that they stop dreaming and murmuring to themselves, ‘I'll be the next SRK' and better take steps towards accomplishing what they dream.

The first thing that is required to suit the bill for becoming an actor, is the determination to continue endeavoring, persevering and the willpower to accept failures, a lot of them. If you need an inspiration, you have Amitabh Bachchan, who was not only rejected but also ridiculed when he expressed his desire for acting in front of directors. And look what he is today….from a spot boy to the biggest superstar alive in India. To be professional and expert actors it is required to acquire a formal training unless one has a godfather, or is a starlet, or takes the help of casting couch or has sources and rapport with big fishes.

One should make full use of community programs, school/college dramas, etc in order to have some experience under the belt. Drama is the staircase that will lead to the silver-screen, and if you have a track of initial days of actors you will surely find drama topping the list. National School of Drama is the one-spot destination for drama in India. The small screen also can act superbly not only as the stepping stone (epitome-SRK) for aspiring movie actors but also as a fame warrantor. Also one should grab every opportunity to participate in reality shows from where one might be spotted and could possibly end up with an acting offer, or a hosting opportunity, etc.

Formal training in acting requires enrolment in acting institutes like University of Mysore, faculty of fine arts, Rabindra Bharati University, Osmania University, Satyajit Ray Film & Television Institute, Film and Television Institute of Pune, Imago Acting School, Mumbai Asian Academy of Film and Television, Whistling Woods and many such institutes. These institutes not only brush up one's histrionic skills but also carve out a well accomplished actor from a mere aspirant cum student. Being a graduate regardless of stream is a must in some cases. The last thing one should do is sit back home and think that he/she will be spotted by some director in a restaurant… Don't be swayed by such rare fairy tales. One should also take part in auditions, be it dance or acting… to know how to dance is a key component in acting in India…You never know, what takes you where. There are people who participated in singing reality shows like Indian Idol and Sa Re Ga Ma Pa and are now acting big time in small screen. So

I repeat, taking part in reality shows of any kind could prove beneficial. We should not forget even shows like Splitsvilla and Roadies have produced actors. Lastly, being emotional, expressive and sensitive to people around you are important but not all that is required…Formal training or practical methods are to be made use of…Best of luck… Be practical in your approach
