Acidity or Heartburn : It can even lead to death

Acidity or acid reflux is a common problem for many people. It is also called as heartburn. Most of us rarely take it seriously. We think that it is a simple problem and just do not bother about it. This initially may be simple problem, but as time passes, it can lead to further problems that may not be vary simple.
Acid reflux is more common in India than in other places. It can occur in any person. The best method to prevent it is to have a mild change in diet.


Preventive Measures for avoiding Acid Reflux

1. It is better not to lie down immediately after eating.
It is also better if you can eat at least two hours before you are going to lie down. This will give time for digestion and prevent acidity.

2. It would be beat if the head side of the bed is raised. This will help by preventing the reflux, as the reflux has to work against gravity. Try to raise the head end of the bed using blocks of wood or stones.

3. It will also help if the person is able to lose weight. This has been found to reduce reflux in certain people.

4. A decrease in smoking and alcohol consumption will also help in reducing or preventing acid reflux. Also it decreases the cause of esophageal cancer.

5. It is also best to avoid foods like coffee, tea,chocolates,cakes and other fried and spicy food. These increase the occurrence of acid reflux.

6. Taking small frequent meals instead of large meals help in reducing acid reflux

Problems due to Acid reflux/ heartburn:


Heartburn can lead to esophageal cancer in many patients. It has been found by research that this condition can lead to carcinoma formation that is not easily treated by conservative methods and needs surgery to be cured.

The chance of getting carcinoma increases if the patient has been smoking or is a regular consumer of alcohol.

Treatment:

1. Regular intake of antacids will help.
2. Changes in diet and trying to consume food that help prevent or reduce occurrence of heartburn.

Precautions:

If you have severe heartburn or if it is present several times a week, try to consult your physician.
It is also better to have regular endoscopy done with your physician to find if there are any carcinomatous changes present.

Following these precautions and preventive measures will help save you from the dangerous complications of heartburn.
