I always see this stranger in a happy mood. Sleeping in bus stand during night, running pan-masala business during day (Pan-masala business is a form of chewing tobacco make-shift work and many poor people in India do it. They often sell cigarettes and paan as well.). I was very curious about this guy's happiness and the reason behind his forever smiling face.

One day walked to him, bought a pan-masala and gave money. He showed the change, but I denied. Started chewing that and asked him:

Where are you from?
He said Bihar.

I asked: From how long you are here?
He said: Since last 5 years.

How often you go home?
He said, once in three months.

I was thinking how to put my question, so I simply said a lie:
My cousin does pan-business. But he is not happy about his business. What about you? Are you happy in this?
He replied calmly, "City runs very fast during the day, I keep myself busy, along with that. In the night, bus stop is my home.

I asked him, "Are you married?"
He replied "Yes. My wife is working in my native place (Bihar). She lives her with whatever earning she has and I live on my earnings. When I go home to my native place, we live together. I have 2 brothers. One is working in Delhi, another is in Ahmadabad. Even their life is not different than me. Our dad and mom do not work. We take care of them. When I am here for business, I just care about the business and I do not worry about home or family. I go for a movie in a local theater once in a week and I like the Yakshagana of this state. Even the small quarrels happening among other people on the street and even other road side drama are entertainments for me. For example: Yesterday, two drunken persons were quarrelling. It was very nice.

I was comparing him with a rich person, who has everything in life, but is still not happy. The kind of attitude that poor person is has is truly wonderful and his words were like the speech being given at personality development workshops. The poverty is being measured in terms of money. But in actual sense, the attitude of a person to be happy with his earning can really keep him happy. That is the concept though Gautham Buddha. I wonder how this person has applied such a philosophy into his life. But we never study the life of such people. We always look at the people higher than our level. But if we can find the happiness of the people who are poorer than us, one question comes to us "Why can't I also be happy like him?"
